Fic: 'Nine', BtVS (Spike/Xander)

He stares at the boy from his shadowed place underneath the Magic Box stairs, unseen and unremarked upon, at least until Buffy notices and chases him out or presses him into thankless demon-slaying service, and wonders what it is about Xander that makes his spine ache, his stomach knot, his unflowing blood burn hot and his cock stir. Xander isn’t so smart, isn’t so handsome, isn’t kind to him, but there’s something there, something that can almost fool him into believing his heart can thump. Just occasionally, just now and again, just every time he comes across the kid unexpectedly, every time it looks like Xander’s about to put himself in harm’s way again.

Stupid boy can’t seem to keep out of trouble. If he’s not being possessed by some zoo animal, he’s falling for someone totally unsuitable, someone who’d eat him as soon as look at him. And not in the good way. Spike knows all about the good way and he’d be pleased to demonstrate but every time he opens his mouth to explain this to Xander, in words he’s practiced again and again and knows deep inside are the perfect tool of seduction, they come out as gibberish, Xander looks at him like he’s a bug and Spike slinks away.

Xander can see Spike from the corner of his eye, hiding out in his usual spot. He idly notices that the top of Spike’s head is exactly aligned with the ninth step of the staircase and wonders if there’s some cosmic significance in that. Maybe it’s a sign he should go over there and say hi to Spike in exactly nine minutes, strike up a real conversation that doesn’t include deadly insults and promises of staking. Or maybe he should obey the instincts that have consumed every waking moment since he first laid eyes on Spike and grab him by the wrist and drag him somewhere, anywhere they can be alone and… His imagination fails at that point, but he’s pretty sure Spike will know what to do next.

Maybe in nine hours, nine days, nine weeks…

I'm not a slash fan, and this particular pairing makes my toes curl (not in a good way :-) but I do appreciate your writing. It's so neat -- one thing leads to the next, and that to the next, and then that back to the beginning... Lovely.

Oh my goodness! This was utterly and compltely perfect. I'm slightly speechless. I love the switch of POV to Xander and that they're both thinking of each other but can't reveal their feelings -- yet.

Oh oh oh oh, this is the best Spander ever! I love the present tense. It gives the whole thing a very quick, breathless sort of feel, high on sexual tension.

Aww, you say the sweetest things. It's the first time I've tried present tense and it created its own impetus and dictated the way the story would sound and feel, even its direction. I think I'll be trying it again! *g*

This was wonderful! They're both so observant of each other, and yet at the same time they're blind to the obvious.

I think this was my favourite line:
"His imagination fails at that point, but he's pretty sure Spike will know what to do next."

Thank you! Exactly. Observation hasn't yet translated into action, though hopefully the time will come.

I'm very glad you liked that line. It's one of my favourites too. Xander is willing, but not quite sure of what he's willing about!

Yes, I liked. And it just cries out for a sequel. ;) Or maybe that's just me.

But I also have to tell you that I was mesmerized before and after reading this by your mood icon. ~shew~ That is some hot Ianto and Jack kissing!! I could watch that alllll day!

I've just recently become a Torchwood fanatic and the Jack/Ianto love is right up there with my Spander devotion. And I've only known about them for a few weeks!!! I need a cool drink or something. ~fans self~

Hadn't read this before. I've got such a long list of things on my to-read list that sometimes they get lost in the shuffle.

I'm glad I found it though.

It's everything I see when I watch the show. The glances, the almost there moments.

Oh, I understand completely. My reading list is getting ridiculous, particularly since I went multi-fandom.

I'm so glad you liked and found it credible! Spike's inner William came out when he was chipped and able to free himself from the humans-are-food mentality, imo.
