Hub4 - Report

Okay, first you need to go read suki_blue's report, which is much funnier and more informative, but I shall do my 'umble best. ;)

First off, it was brilliant. My second favourite con, lagging slightly behind The Hub2 because that was Suki's and my first con EVAH so we have fond memories.

We didn't get lost. Not once, I promise. Okay, I was late getting to Suki's place but she's used to that. *g* TomTom worked perfectly so we took the right turnings. Eep!

Got to the hotel, very nice indeed, met up with accioscar and sweet_exile and off to the Opening Ceremony. Then off to the Gold Reception. Colin Teague, the director of several episodes of Torchwood including 'Meat', was there and I verbally diarrheaed all over him. He was at once stoic and friendly. Not an easy mix.

Kai was adorable, as always. Naoko was stunningly beautiful, sweet and generous.

Saturday was busy. Ho boy, was it busy. Autograph lines, photoshoots, Q&As, and, as usual, Showmasters had it all in hand and there was no confusion. They know how to run a con. Colin was scheduled to appear on Sunday but had to toddle off so the programme was changed almost seamlessly. Serious props to the Showmasters fanboys!

Embarrassing Memorable signing line incident. A post-it with my personalised name was attached to the photo I wanted signed:

Me: Hi! *manically*
Tom: Hi! I had a neighbour called 'Kitty' *charmingly*
Me: Was her real name 'Kathleen'?
Tom: Yes it was! What's your real name?
Me: Sue
Tom: ...

Me: I saw you in Doctors. I bet that's the first time you've heard that this weekend.
Tom: *eyeing me suspiciously* It is, actually. That was a weird shoot.

At a later Q&A, Tom said Doctors was the one job he'd like to remove from his CV. *sigh*

Suffice to say, the final Q&A with all guests had the audience crying with laughter. Ian Gelder and Susan Brown, two very experienced and dignified actors of my generation *ahem* got the joke and were hilarious, particularly Ian. On the signing line, we agreed that we remembered the '60's far too well to have properly experienced them. Which will only be funny to peeeps of our generation but I'm allowed to be indulgent. *g*

Naoko said something vaguely disgusting and was sent out of the room, at which point Tom and Kai took a lap. Tom won! This makes absolutely no sense to anyone who wasn't there but it's very late and I should be in bed.The guests were, without exception, amusing, approachable, friendly and very funny. Eve Myles is mental! Vibrant, full of energy, beautiful. At my photoshoot with her:

Me: Hi! *manically*
Eve: Hello! *puts arm around me*
Me: That's such a pretty dress
Eve: Thank you! I'll give it to you later.
Me: Yeah, that'll fit.
Eve: *giggles madly*

It was really, really good. As if you hadn't guessed.

You guys do make me wish I'd gone now!

I've deleted all my Torchwood icons :( Have one of Eve in Merlin instead

Aww, it'd have been so great if you'd been there! I'm not really in the fandom any more but have an enduring love for the actors. One of the loveliest things was that they're clearly dear friends. Not a snipe to be found.

Blimey, I probably shouldn't have got rid of most of my TW icons either. Have pretty boys together...

I get that impression from the SPN actors to be honest. Certainly the ones that do cons regularly

It does make a difference in the way we perceive them. Kai made it crystal that Tom is pretty much his best male friend and Eve is his best friend, full stop. Eve has worked with Ian and Sue Brown and the affection was just flying.

Not in that rather sickly, Hollywoody way, thank heavens.

Kai and Tom were on 'Ready, Steady Cook together. Hilarious!

I wish I had been there. It sounds wicked cool!

It was wonderful, Gabrielle! Even though I'm not really in the fandom any more, I still have great affection for it and the actors. Icing on the cake if you'd been there!

Sounds like you had wonderful fun!

It was brilliant!

Eve's dress would've barely covered my left boob but she said, "I've just had a baby so it covers a multititude of sins."

She's a good Welsh girl, she is. No faffing about with being a Size minus 3 and getting the gap in her front teeth fixed. Mental, she is! A real high point.

Ohhhh, I am so glad you and Suki had fun! *hugs*

Tom does stand-up as well as acting so I'm rather proud at leaving him speechless. *g*

We had such a good time! The hotel was excellent - scrupulously clean room and kick-arse shower. Love!

That sounds such fun. They are a really nice bunch.

I got talking on the train to Swansea to a guy who told me that he had been in 'Doctors'. I had to confess I had never seen it, and he gave me the impression that I hadn't missed anything. Sadly, I took his name and then promptly forgot it.

He said that he knew Kai and Eve well, and it sounds as if the Cardiff gang hang out together as genuine friends, whereas with the LA crew it always seems to be surface bonhomie with nothing below the surface.

It was brilliant! They're lovely and, you're right, they are genuine. We saw them in the bar and the unconscious touching and laughter was exactly what you'd see in a group of close friends.

Judging by their tweets, Jim Beaver and Misha Collins from SPN are close enough to take the pee out of one another unmercifully and Jensen and Jared get on well enough to share a house, but I'm often suspicious about actors who say, "(S)he is my bestest mate!" Hmmm.

'Doctors' is apparently the best employer of actors in this country but the eps veer wildly from ridiculous to pretty good. Tom was in one of the sillier ones. *g*

Heee! You would've loved it, Jamie!

They finished up early on Saturday night so we could all toddle off to see Doctor Who and on Sunday Kai took a cheering poll on whether or not we liked Matt. The answer was a resounding YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!! \0/

*manly squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*

This makes me happy and jealous/envious/homicidal with covet rage

I'm so happy you had a great time. :) *hug*
Apr. 13th, 2010 10:53 am (UTC)
LOL! *pets you*

We're giving Hub5 a miss as we've spent quite enough on cons this year, thank you very much, but I'll remind you when Hub6 turns up in case you can find the time/wherewithall to go and we can meet!

Aww, thanks, hon. It was such fun. Lovely to see familiar faces again, both on and off the podium. *huggles*
Apr. 13th, 2010 10:45 am (UTC)
PS: I remade the Shiny icon, feel free to keep using that one or gak this one, they're basically the same... LOL
Apr. 13th, 2010 10:56 am (UTC)
Ooh, pretty! *headswivel* They are quite similar. LOL!
Apr. 13th, 2010 11:25 am (UTC)

It really was a fab con. Surprisingly I managed to keep myself pretty much cool and collected with the guests.

That was except for the small incident at the bar on Saturday where I told Ian H.(drunk on my ass) that I had a new favorite word and then proceeded to tell him what it was and he told me it was a very bad word. And then he remembered our discussion the next day when I went to get his autograph. *blush*

Was great seeing you again!
Apr. 13th, 2010 12:00 pm (UTC)

It was a classic con, one we'll always remember. Even without John, James or Gareth! Kai, Tom and Eve are perfectly capable of headlining and they seemed to love it. As James once said, in the street he's just another actor; at a con he's Brad Pitt. *g*

LMAO! I was in the bar too but didn't hear that conversation! Do you remember he put on a very good Aussie accent when I said I was Australian? He did it again in the signing line next day. Good memory, sadly for us. ;)

Great seeing you again too! *hugs*
Apr. 13th, 2010 06:05 pm (UTC)
Tom: Yes it was! What's your real name?
Me: Sue

ROFL! That's just perfect, sweetie. *giggles*

I'm so glad you had such a brilliant time.
Apr. 13th, 2010 06:14 pm (UTC)
LOL! The poor man looked completely stunned. Huh???

We did, we did have a brill time! So tempting to sign up for Hub5 in October, but we've got Roadhouse (the SPN con) and limited amounts of time and money, bugger it. Sometimes life just ain't fair. *pouts*

Apr. 13th, 2010 06:56 pm (UTC)
Hee! Tom is fast becoming my favourite. I love the combination of him, Kai, Eve and Naoko. The all bounce so well off each other.

It was an awesome weekend. I wish we could go back in time and do it again. Doctor?
Apr. 13th, 2010 07:06 pm (UTC)
Tom's my fave too! After Kai. They and Eve were a terrific combo. They made it, even with no John, James or Gareth!

It was legen...wait for it...dary! Who? :P

You haz icon! *rummages around*

We did! Everyone was on top form, charming and funny, and it was one of the best events we've ever been to. Want to go back and do it all over again. Twice!
Apr. 13th, 2010 11:06 pm (UTC)
It sounds like -- maybe -- you were on the sauce...

But it sounds like you had fun ;-)

Apr. 13th, 2010 11:37 pm (UTC)
The tragic thing is that the only sauce I was on was HP! Can't speak for them. *g*

We had a wonderful time, truly excellent. I love cons. *dances*
Apr. 14th, 2010 12:42 pm (UTC)
Aw you didn't mention the bizarre wookie orgasm or the surprise orgasm! Lol! Huh, kinda makes me look weird to anyone reading this and not having been there, doesn't it? I was told by one of the organisers (jokingly... I think) that my friend should go before me in the line all the time because if I go first, then her name sounds boring! Lol. She did have a point though as all the actors mentioned my name, which made Budgie huff behind me. Heh. Glad you had a good time though! It was a great weekend, was it not!
Apr. 15th, 2010 12:46 pm (UTC)
LOL! So many things sound weird unless you were there, don't they? I knew I'd missed quite a few highlights but some are so hard to describe!

Glad you had a good time too! Definitely one of the best cons I've ever attended. Showmasters always do such a great job. We'd love to go to Hub5 but money and time is an issue. Can't do them all, unfortunately.
Apr. 15th, 2010 02:10 pm (UTC)
Yeah, we're not going to Hub5 either, we're saving up instead to go to Comic Con in San Diego next year, so yeah, I'm gonna be going hungry for a little while. Lol.

It was definitely a good con though, glad I went! I think I love Kai all the more now though! Heh!
Apr. 15th, 2010 05:40 pm (UTC)
We're going to writerconuk in August and Roadhouse in September so it's a bit much to go away again in October. Hubby is very patient with all my gadding about but I really need to spend some time with him. *g*

Did you see Sarah had the babe yesterday? Kai's a daddy! He was just lovely. I barely even missed Gareth.
