J2 Recs 2010 (1)

Yes, it's that time again. The spn_j2_bigbang is back, bigger and better than ever!

As usual, I'll give a pass to the Wincest, *gag*, but here's the best and brightest of the RPS. I'm aware of the irony. Some people find RPS as unpleasant as I do Wincest. Ce la vie. ;o)

Title: In Becoming Who We Are
Author name: errant_jane
Artist name: egotists
Genre: RPS AU
Pairing: Jensen/JDM, Jared/Jensen
Rating: NC-17
Word count: ~82,700
Summary: Fresh out of school with a degree from the University of Washington, Jensen meets and falls for Jeff Morgan. He may not know what he wants to do with his life, but for the first time since leaving Texas, he feels like things are coming together. Jeff seems like the perfect guy, right up until it all falls apart, and Jensen is left wondering where he went wrong.
A couple failed relationships and a few years later, Jensen's decided that one-night stands are preferable to dates. He's got his friends and his roommate, Sophia, for everything non-sex related, after all. Until Sophia decides to move in with her boyfriend and Jensen's stuck trying to find a new roommate. At Sophia's insistence, Jensen meets Jared Padalecki and the two become fast friends. Only, the more they get to know each other, the more obvious it is that there's something there. But Jensen is unwilling to risk losing Jared's friendship for the possibility of more. Unfortunately, if he doesn't get things figured out, he might lose Jared anyway.
Reason for reading: For me, the standout fic of the first week. Beautifully written, affecting in all the right ways, I'll be surprised if anyone turns out a better story. Seriously unmissable for J2 fans or those who are curious.

Title: A spotlight on these desolate dreams
Author: _mournthewicked
Artist: woodstarling
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: Adult.
Warnings: Minor character death (on and off screen), violence, angst.
Word Count: ~ 50,000
Disclaimer: Look up fiction in the dictionary. You won’t find a picture of this story, but the definition of the word ‘fiction’, which this is.
Summary: In high school, Jared Padalecki had it all. He was surrounded with rich, famous, beautiful friends and partied with young Hollywood's elite. As if all of that wasn't exciting enough, he used the tricks he learned from his grandfather to become an amateur sleuth with his billionaire best friend, Jensen Ackles, playing the role of trusty sidekick. But when he got in over his head and lost everything he once held dear, he knew that it was time to move on. That was ten years ago. Now he lives the lonely life of a hardboiled private investigator on the streets of Manhattan, and his fabulous past is nothing but a distant memory. That is, until a tragedy forces him to return to California and the world he left behind. Between juggling rabid paparazzi, sarcastic detectives, and a spurned ex-best friend, it's a wonder that he can possibly find the time to solve a murder that has left the city of angels reeling.
Reason for reading: The author is incapable of turning out an unreadable fic, but this is particularly well thought through. Her writing is invariably first class, with some minor caveats (personally, I can't abide 'off of') and this doesn't disappoint.

Welcome! There were a couple of others I thought about reccing, but these stood above the rest. A good first week, all in all, and I'm looking forward to more.

I SECOND BOTH OF THOSE! *G* Once I finished Spotlight, I wanted to go back to the beginning and start it all over again. I have never run into a story that made me want to do that.

YAY! *g*

Becoming has the slight edge for me, but they're both well worth reading and re-reading. They're now fixtures on the eReader, to be savoured again and again. Don't you just love Bigbang season? LOL

Don't you just love Bigbang season?
YES Absolutely!

If I could only pick one of those, I would go for Spotlight because I'm a huge fan of that kind of detective fiction. It made me haul out my Raymond Chandler books. :D And if Sam Winchester (or Jared Padelecki) ever dresses in a suit and fedora I know I'll be making embarrassing noises and flailing.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. Raymond Chandler and Micky Spillane... *happy sigh*

A Really Good Detective Never Gets Married is one of my all-time faves and I make embarrassing flailing noises every. Single. Time. Just noticed she's written a sequel! SQUEEEE!

Aww, thank you, Jamie! For various reasons, I haven't been online much and have been neglecting LJ shamefully. Miss you too! *love and hugs*
